Unfortunately, Dr. King was shot and killed by a sniper in Memphis on April 4, 1968.
At the time of his death, Martin Luther King, Jr. had already accomplished so much as a civil rights leader. He had helped to pass two important laws, the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act, and he brought the issues of inequality and injustice in America into the public eye. Moreover, he did all of this through peaceful nonviolent means. He continued to fight for equality until the very end, when he literally gave his life for what he believed in.

Think About It
Even though Dr. King had already given so much to his country, and even though he had helped to pass important laws and began to change the whole country into a place with more justice and equality, he still did not give up. Even when he was getting tired, he continued to fight for equality until he gave his life for what he believed in.
Think about what it means to never give up, no matter what.
