What to Enter
Communicate what you have learned about Dr. King’s ideals – Democracy, Justice, Love and Hope – as well as how you plan to carry the legacy forward. You may express your thoughts through the following category formats:
- Essay
- Art
- Video
Category List Format
Essay: Please write your thoughts in a brief essay with a minimum of 100 words but no more than 500.
- Grades 3-5: 100-200 word essay
- Grades 6-8: 200-350 word essay
- Grades 9-12: 250-500 word essay
Art: Draw with any medium (pencil, water-color, crayon, oil paints, etc) on a surface at least 8×10 inches and no larger than 12×14 inches. All art must be mounted on a black poster board no larger than 18×24 inches for submission. The Memorial Foundation is not responsible for damaged submissions.
Video: Produce a video in any format, but no more than 3 minutes in length. The video bust be transferred to a DVD. Be sure that the submitted DVDs will play on a consumer DVD player. If the entry cannot be played on a consumer DVD player, it is subject to disqualification. The Memorial Foundation is not responsible for damaged submissions.
All Entries Must
- Meet all eligibility and deadline requirements.
- Be entered in the Format Category and be correctly identified with the participant’s name.
- Include a completed and signed entry form.
- Conform to all entry rules and guidelines.
- Be an original work by the student.
Judging Criteria
Of all entries submitted, 25% will be randomly selected from each grade group and category, and then judged based on the following criteria:
- Originality and uniqueness
- Historical context
- Personal reflection
- Visionary perspective
- Quality of work
The decision of the judges is final.

Eligibility
The Kids for King Education Initiative is open to all U.S. residents between the ages of 6 and 18 who attend public, private, charter, Department of Defense schools and home schools, and are in grades 3-12 in the United States. The categories for grade groups (homeschooled, age as of March 31, 2010 are as follows:
- Grade 3-5 (homeschooled, ages 7-10)
- Grade 6-8 (homeschooled, ages 11-13)
- Grade 9-12 (homeschooled, ages 14-18)

All entries must be signed by a parent or legal guardian to be eligible for review and consideration by the Kids for King Educational Initiative. By submitting the entry, participants acknowledge the rights of the Washington DC Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, Inc. and The Travelers Companies, Inc. to publish, exhibit, and/or market the submission. Donations are not required with the submission of an entry. A participant may submit one entry in one grade group and one submission format category only.
