To the Kids of America:
We are very happy to share with you, your family, and your teachers some important information about the memorial currently being built on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. One of the reasons this memorial is so special is because it will be the first major memorial on the National Mall that does not honor a U.S. president or a war, but instead honors a man who dedicated his life to fighting for human rights and promoting peace.
The Memorial, which will be located near the Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson memorials, will serve as a stage to showcase Dr. King’s national and international contributions to humankind. It will remind the world of Dr. King’s dedication to the idea that all people should be treated equally and that each of us has a responsibility to make this happen.
As part of our effort to build the Memorial, we invite you to be a part of history by participating in our Kids for King Education Initiative. It’s easy to enter. Just write an essay, create a piece of art, or produce a short video expressing what you have learned about Dr. King’s ideals of Democracy, Justice, Love and Hope as well as how you plan to carry the legacy forward.
If your essay, art, or video entry is selected, you will be recognized on a trip to Washington, D.C. accompanied by your legal guardian in the fall of 2010.
